For thirty years I’ve built my career around movement — getting people up, moving, and sweating. But if you had asked me in my twenties what mattered most for a strong, resilient body, I would have said reps and cardio. I was wrong. The longer I do this work, the more I realize that what happens between your workouts is just as important as the workouts themselves.

This is actually a big part of why I love co-hosting Golden Energy Reset with my friend Roxanne Massey. She spent over 30 years as a registered nurse before founding Golden Glow Living, and she sees the clinical side of everything I see from the training floor. When we compare notes, the picture gets a lot more complete — so I asked her to weigh in throughout this piece.

As I’ve gotten older, three things have completely changed how I train, how I coach, and how I live: sleep, muscle-building science, and bone health. None of them are glamorous. All of them are non-negotiable.

SLEEP ISN’T A LUXURY — IT’S WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS:

I used to treat sleep like an afterthought, something that happened after the “real work” of the day was done. Now I protect it like I protect my workouts.

Here’s the truth: your body doesn’t build strength in the gym. It builds strength while you’re asleep. That’s when muscle repairs, hormones regulate, and your nervous system resets. As we age, sleep quality naturally shifts — and if you’re not intentional about it, that shift can quietly undo the progress you’re making everywhere else. I’ve learned to treat my wind-down the same way I treat my warm-up: no phone an hour before bed, a consistent bedtime, and a stretch session to tell my body it’s safe to power down. This is exactly why I lead our nightly Stretch & Restore sessions on retreat — recovery is where the transformation actually locks in.

Roxanne’s take: “In my nursing career, sleep disruption was almost always one of the first signs that something deeper was out of balance — usually hormonal. So many women in midlife chalk up poor sleep to ‘just getting older’ when it’s often connected to shifting estrogen and progesterone levels. The fatigue, the 3 a.m. wake-ups, the wired-but-tired feeling — these are real, physiological patterns, not a personal failing. Once we identify what’s actually driving the disruption, sleep is one of the most responsive things we can improve.”

PEPTIDES AND MUSCLE GROWTH: A NEW TOOL, NOT A SHORTCUT:

I get asked about peptides constantly these days, and I’ll be honest — I approached the topic with a trainer’s healthy skepticism at first. But the more I’ve learned, the more I understand why this is one of the fastest-growing conversations in longevity and recovery science.

Peptides won’t replace consistent strength training — nothing will. What they can do, when used thoughtfully and under proper guidance, is support the recovery process that makes strength training actually work: helping the body repair tissue, respond to resistance training, and recover between sessions. I’m not a doctor, and this isn’t medical advice — it’s exactly why we bring in real expertise to unpack this topic properly at Golden Energy Reset. Knowledge is power, and understanding your options is part of taking ownership of your body as it evolves.

Roxanne’s take: “This is the piece of the puzzle I get the most questions about, and rightly so — it’s a newer area and it deserves real explanation, not hype. Peptides are one tool within a much bigger framework that includes metabolic health, hormonal balance, nutrition, and movement. I always tell women the same thing I tell my clients at Golden Glow Living: this only works as a complement to the fundamentals Debbie teaches on the training floor, never as a replacement for them. My goal in our workshop is to help you understand the actual science so you can ask your own doctor informed questions — not to hand out a protocol.”

BUILDING STRONG BONES: THE FOUNDATION NOBODY SEES:

Muscle gets all the attention because you can see it in the mirror. Bone density doesn’t get the same spotlight — until it becomes a problem. I think about it differently now: bones are the scaffolding everything else is built on.

The encouraging news is that bone-building responds beautifully to the same things I’ve been preaching for years — resistance training, weight-bearing movement, and proper nutrition. It’s never too late to start reinforcing that foundation, and it’s one of the most important investments you can make in your independence down the road.

Roxanne’s take: “Bone density loss can accelerate significantly around perimenopause and menopause, largely because of the drop in estrogen, which plays a direct role in maintaining bone turnover. This is why I encourage women not to wait for a bone scan to start paying attention. Alongside the resistance training Debbie champions, we also look at calcium and vitamin D status, protein intake, and, when appropriate, hormonal or regenerative support. It’s a full-body conversation, not a single fix.”

WHY WE BUILT THIS INTO GOLDEN ENERGY RESET:

We didn’t want to create another retreat that’s just workouts and smoothies. Sleep, recovery, hormones, and bone health are the parts of this journey most women never get taught — and combining Roxanne’s clinical background with my 30 years on the training floor means you get both sides of the story in one place. That’s exactly what we’re diving into together this November in Belize, alongside strength training, mindset work, and real rest in one of the most beautiful settings either of us has ever worked in.

It’s never too late to begin again — and your best chapter may still be ahead.
