Q&A with Veronica Valli
Behind the Retreats: Veronica’s Story & Expertise
What are some of the events or challenges that led you to develop your work?
I was a teenage drug and alcohol addict; my life was a mess. I was incapable of having a healthy relationship or holding down a job. Desperate and alone, I got sober at 27 years old. Stopping drinking was only the start. When you get sober, it is an invitation to transformational personal development.
Who inspired you when you first started on this journey?
I met a sober woman, and it shocked me as up until that point, I thought everyone drank; I never realised that not drinking alcohol was an option. She gave me a completely different worldview.
What were three of your favorite books that helped you get clear on your path?
- The Sermon on the Mount by Emmett Fox.
- The obstacle is the way by Ryan Holiday.
- A Return to Self by Marrianne Williamson.
What are some ways you manage work life balance?
I am very lucky that my husband is retired, and he does all of the household duties and runs our kids around.
Where do you live now and is this your dream location and why?
I’m originally from the UK but now live in the Deep South (USA).
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Spending time with my kids.
Where did you spend most of your childhood?
Norfolk, England.
What are your favorite three movies of all time and why?
- Dr. Zhivago – I loved watching this with my mum, it’s an amazing story.
- Moulin Rouge – I love musicals.
- Aftersun – a very moving film for anyone who has lost a parent.
Tell us about your current or past pets and what they mean to you in your daily life.
I got my first dog four years ago (Cadbury). Before then, I really couldn’t understand why people were so obsessed with their dogs. Now I do. I will never be without a dog again.
What are your morning practices and routines that set you up to win every day?
I’ve had a daily self-reflection practice for over twenty years. I read something that prompts me to think and reflect, and I meditate and pray. Then, I do structured journaling where I write out any resentments, fears, and limiting beliefs I have. I finish with a gratitude list.
What are you passionate about that most people don’t know?
Soccer! Watching England in the World Cup.
